Have a loose ring? Here’s how you can tighten it.

I love rings. So much so I have a ridiculous number of them. It’s rather easy to get nice rings (cheaply too) here in Singapore, with my favourite haunts being the weekly flea markets at SCAPE and on the mobile e-commerce app Carousell.

My ridiculous collection of rings.
My funky (bordering slightly on geeky) ring collection.

I grew my collection again yesterday at the SCAPE flea market. I usually wear adjustable rings or rings with an inner diameter of 17mm. But this particular stall I was browsing didn’t have many adjustable rings, I spent ages trying on ring after ring to gauge the right sizing.

However, I still went home with two rings in the wrong size.

Perhaps my fingers had expanded a little more than usual yesterday, because both rings were a millimeter too big. Sounds small, but it makes a lot of difference in ring sizing. Plus, I have really tiny fingers to begin with.

A search online on how to tighten rings brought up suggestions such as attaching a ring guard/sizer (cumbersome) or applying a thin layer of cushion solution.

The latter method appealed to me but it was near impossible to find cushion solution here in Singapore. (I don’t even know where to begin.)

So I decided to substitute it with something else. I used Sally Hansen’s Diamond Flash Top Coat. (Actually, any clear nail polish/top coat/base coat will do fine too.)

Sally Hansen's Diamond Flash Top Coat

To reduce your ring size by one milimetre, apply three coats of polish on the inner surface of your ring, leaving it to dry for about a minute in between coats.

After applying the last coat, let the ring sit for half a day to ensure that the thick coat of polish dries completely. The layer of nail polish coating should feel solid to the touch, even when it is pressed. If it feels soft/cushiony, it has not dried enough yet.

Finally, a wearable ring!
Spot the polish coating on the inner surface of the ring on the left.

And voila – a simple method to tighten a ring using products you’d (most probably) already have at home. What more, you can CTRL-Z the whole process if you make a mistake. Just use nail polish remover and you’ll be back at the original size.

A gift to my favourite couple

So my favourite couple Grace and Douglas recently got engaged! In Switzerland no less. Woohoo! It got little ol’ me so excited that I just had to get them something. :P

Store-bought gifts are just so tacky, and I always liked DIY-ing gifts. So, why not?

I ended up painting tees for them – playing around with Douglas’ last name which is ‘Fun’. Originally thought of “Mr Fun” and “Mrs Fun” (yes, how original that is) but later decided that it would look odd if they were wearing their tees separately. So, I had think of slogans that would still make sense.

Yay for t-shirts!
Viola, homemade couple t-shirts!

I finally decided on “I Am Fun” and “I (Heart) Fun”.

Tracing the letters (and especially the heart) proved to be a challenge – I had no stencils to fall back on apart from a 4B pencil and a ruler. Painting in the letters without going beyond the lines was an even greater challenge. (It was midnight, and I was pretty sleepy.) But still, they turned out awesome.

All packed and ready to go!
All packed and ready to go!

Hurrah!

If you’d like a detailed post on how I paint my t-shirts, you may want to check this out.

Sidenote, the plain tees were from Giordano. Pretty awesome material too – soft and comfy – with a wide range of colours. I might even want to get some to DIY more tees for myself. We’ll see.

Mystery of the missing cloth – a happy ending

Remember the missing piece of white cloth I was griping about in my previous post?

Well, yes. That was more than two weeks ago. And as of three days before today, I was still a wreck, wondering where that dratted piece of cloth was because I really wanted to sew my pants. And this was after nearly two weeks of checking every single corner of my room. (Nope, still no white cloth.)

Two days, I came home from work … and found the white cloth sitting on my desk.

When I say sitting on my desk, I really mean sitting on my desk. In full view.

So, obviously someone has found it and placed it there. But who … ? And where … ? So, I decided to ask the family maid, since she usually cleans up some stuff in my room when I’m out.

Well, she said she found it behind the boxes stacked by my window. But as far as I know, the cloth had always been sitting on my desk .. until the day it went missing, that is.

“How did it get there?” I pressed. She became a little evasive, hem and hawing in her responses.

Both parents were standing nearby and watching this little exchange with barely concealed grins. By then, all three of us knew … the family maid must have accidentally misplaced the cloth, dropping it in a completely random spot while she went about doing her cleaning (and unfortunately, also yakking on the phone at the same time).

How did we know? Because the same thing happened with my dad’s car keys last week. The object will suddenly go mysteriously missing … and then end up in some random spot not touched by any one of us.

Now, the white cloth is placed neatly on the shelf next to my desk, in full view (and extremely accessible) to me when I want to use it.

Unfortunately, I no longer feel like sewing my pants now. :(

Sidenote: I also mentioned in the earlier post that I decluttered my desk before discovering the cloth was missing. Well, honestly – I can’t remember whether I saw the cloth there when I was clearing my desk either. So what’s worse than one absent-minded person? Two absent-minded people. :/
